The most impressive thing Patriots coach Bill Belichick has done, vis a vis quarterback Tom Brady, is sticking with him in the early days.
Brady replaced the injured Drew Bledsoe in 2001 and remained the starter when Bledsoe recovered.
Granted, Belichick was covered by Brady going on to win the Super Bowl.
But the decision to bench his star, well-compensated quarterback was essentially the same decision he made in Cleveland.
He infamously benched local hero Bernie Kosar in favor of Vinny Testaverde.
If I had the decision to make, I would’ve taken personal history into account. I couldn’t get past my prior decision. I’d be anchored to it.
Instead, the correct decision and correct way of reaching a decision is to disregard the past and not be anchored by a previous, subpar outcome.
The key is to develop a framework of what you want, e.g., a value system. And then keep making decisions relative to that system and new information emerging in the present.
