Are you bored?
More often I find myself getting something to do while watching a game. Something to read. Messing around on my phone. Anything that fills the gaps. Is it odd to need to be entertained while watching something that’s supposed to be entertaining?
I’m always shocked at how much down time there is during games. The NFL is: drive, touchdown, commercial, extra point, commercial, kickoff. It’s jarring to switch from Red Zone (with NO commercials!!) and watch a regular game and realize how often they’re going away from the action.
Baseball is the same way. Most pitchers came up through the minors, where they actually follow the rules and get the ball home quickly. Then it falls apart in the majors.
Maybe it’s a modern issue of having too many distractions. Maybe there’s nothing the leagues can do. Maybe they want it this way, so we’re multitasking and following our fantasy teams and other parts of the Brand and the Product. Maybe I’m just a terrible sports fan. (this has always been true)
I embrace the tweaks the leagues are making. Let’s try less time between pitches. Let’s try something more interesting than an easy extra point. Let’s see what works. You have my permission to revert to the status quo if the tweak doesn’t work. Entertainment should be entertaining, no?
